Heathergems
Heathergems Pitlochry, Scotland: the words are synonymous with beauty. The company creates the most exquisite and unique Scottish heather jewellery we've ever seen. The one-of-a-kind pendants, bangles, brooches and earrings are the perfect accessory for any outfit. We're sure you'll fall in love with it too.
The natural gems are handmade from the stems of heather, a common Scottish plant with a vibrant purple bloom. The colourful man-made stones are paired with both contemporary and traditional Celtic jewellery settings to make stunning pieces that are sure to attract attention.
The process to create Heathergems was invented shortly after the Second World War. Hugh Kerr, a craftsman from Glenlivet, quietly created the jewels in his workshop for several years until he met Charles Buyers, an accountant who was looking to grow the craft industry in the Highlands. Even though the development board declined to back the business, Buyers saw its potential and invested his own money. The original company was set up in a small factory in 1970 and continues to be family-owned and operated to this day.
To make the gems, heather is harvested from local moors. The stems are dried and coloured using natural dyes, mixed together and compressed using 80 tonnes of pressure to form a block. The block is then sliced and cut into individual pieces. Skilled craftspeople shape and file each piece before they are lacquered and finally set into silver and pewter fittings. The end result is dazzling, unique jewellery that complements every style. Heathergems make a great gift for any occasion.
